Smiths Detection, Attomarker to develop COVID-19 antibody testing kits

By Mateen Dalal

Smiths Detection, a global leader in security screening technologies, has recently revealed that it has joined forces with multiplex blood-testing technology firm, Attomarker Ltd. The partnership focuses on developing an accurate and robust COVID-19 antibody-testing kit that could signify an evolution in precise and rapid COVID-19 antibody testing.

Reportedly, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has given a green signal to Attomarker’s Triple Antibody Test in the UK for NHS use. According to reliable sources, Attomarker and Smiths Detection has been working together on the performance and design of the device since April and has produced 10 pre-production devices. The company is well equipped to ramp up the production volume according to market demand.

For the record, Attomarker’s Triple Antibody Test kit is a desktop, portable, antibody-testing device developed to deliver laboratory-standard results under critical environments. It provides accurate, rapid and quantitative results under seven minutes which is way less than standard testing equipment that takes up to 72 hours for tests and requires immediate laboratory analysis for precise results.

As for Smiths Detection, it regularly collaborates with governments and companies to build equipment that offers the highest standard of technical performance and is highly accurate in detection.

Speaking on the development, Roland Carter, President, Smiths Detection, said that its team was able to enhance existing products by improving their current designs. These enhancements would not only contribute to its improved robustness and performance but also help in easing its production process.

Additionally, the success that Smiths Detection has experienced in this project so far is a testimony to the high-standard research that its team is able to attain, as well as its flexibility and agility to take up a project and produce results, added Carter.
