French lawmakers approve a bill to deal with fourth wave of Coronavirus

The French parliament recently approved a bill that makes Covid-19 vaccination mandatory for health workers along with a requirement of an approved health pass in several social public places amid the fourth wave of coronavirus infections in France.

Visitors visiting museums, swimming pools, or cinemas in France are already not allowed to enter if they cannot provide a pass showing their details of complete Covid-19 vaccination or a report of a recent negative test. The pass is also required to go clubbing or visiting big festivals.

From August, the pass will further be required to enter restaurants & bars and for plane travels & long-distance train journeys.

The measures included in the bill are scheduled to end on November 15. Before the law comes into effect, it will require final approval from the nation's top jurisdiction, the constitutional court.

It is to be noted that the daily infections in France have slowly increased from about 4,000 new cases daily at the beginning of July to 22,000 cases last week, with an increase in the hospitalization rate too.

Similar to most other countries across Europe, France is combating the highly contagious Delta variant, which is intimidating to extend the pandemic and hinder economic recovery.

According to the country's Institut Pasteur experts, most restrictions in the country could be eased without a resurgence of the epidemic if over 90% of the adults were vaccinated.

49.3% of the 67 million population in France had received one single-shot or two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine until Sunday, which is very less than the threshold to reach herd immunity that some experts suggest could help greatly to curb the coronavirus transmission.

In this context, authorities are speeding up efforts to promote mass vaccination and are gradually increasing outreach to those who haven’t made any appointments yet.
